There are two kinds of minds. One is an open mind. Another is a closed mind. A closed mind is that which says, “This is how it is. I know it. That is it.” It gets hardened. An open mind says, “Oh, maybe, perhaps. I do not know.” Limited knowledge, and the conformity about it, makes a mind very hard.

Whenever you seem to understand a situation and you label it, “I know this is how it is,” that is the beginning of your problem. And always all problems arise from knowing but not from not knowing. If you do not know, your mind is open, you say “Oh, maybe, something, perhaps, don’t know.” You wait. You cannot label something when you do not know. Whenever you think an injustice has been made to you, or whenever you think you are suffering, whenever you think you are a victim, whenever you think something bad has happened to you—all this falls under the category of “I know it. This is how things are.” Whenever we attach a label “not good,” it comes from a thorough knowledge.

A question is a sign of limited knowledge. But when there is amazement—patience, joy, waiting, you are in a state of “I don’t know,” maybe, something, oh what is it? I don’t know, something you cannot pinpoint—the whole life is a shift from the limited “I know” to all possibilities, to “maybe.”

You think you know the world and “This is it.” That is the biggest problem. This is not just one world. There are many layers in this world.  When you are upset, you are not just upset just for no reason. There is some other string that is being pulled. That’s why there are these children stories that say: oh, guardian angels, there are angels who give you a gift, and there are angels who give you trouble. Not good, you don’t call them angels. You call them evil, the devil which will come and tempt you, bring you temptation.

When your mind is open for all possibilities, an event happens, and there could be many possibilities for that event to be that way, not just in the gross—some other reasons in the subtle also. Suppose you walked into your room and you find your roommate has made a big mess. It has irritated you and you attach that reason as the cause for your anger. But there is something more happening, something more happening in the subtle.

There has been some angry vibrations at that moment. But you could only see that person creating a mess around you. And you attribute all anger to that person. This is what limited knowledge does. Haven’t you experienced this sometime?

As we attach the events to individuals, the emotions to individuals, the cycle continues. You will never be free from that. Detach it from the person and the event and attach it to space and time. This science is called astrology. Astrology is the knowledge of the oneness of the universe.

If a pin is pricked into your hand, your whole body, your entire body feels it, right? Just one pinprick in your hand, you say, “Aah!” That is felt by the entire system. So every cell is connected with the whole of you. In the
same way, everybody is connected to the whole entire creation, to everybody. Because there is only one life at a very subtle level. Though it appears to be many on the gross, when you go deeper and deeper, there is one existence, one divine.

On one level everybody is different, they’re young, old, intelligent, wise, and
dull, and all types. On one level we have different types. But on a deeper level, there is only you. Only you, nothing else. That is so one doesn’t see the intention behind others’ mistakes. Or not attribute mistakes to somebody and hold a grudge over them. So the mind drops the cravings and aversions and becomes free.
